Brands A–Z

Blazy Susan

Founded: 2017, Denver, Colorado, by William Breakell

Known for: pink papers, cones and rolling trays

Best for: anyone who wants their kit to stand out on the table

The name's a play on "Lazy Susan", and fittingly the brand's first product was a rolling tray. Blazy Susan made its name with pink papers, which it launched to raise awareness of breast cancer, and has since added purple, brown (unbleached) and black ultra-thin lines.

The brand says its papers are vegan, non-GMO and non-chlorinated, and its pink papers are made from 14.5 gsm wood pulp. Booklets hold 50 leaves.

Clipper

Since: 1972, made by Flamagas of Barcelona, Spain

Known for: the round, refillable lighter everyone’s mate has borrowed

Best for: a lighter that lasts years, not weeks

The Clipper was designed by Enric Sardà and first made in 1972. Unlike most disposables, it's refillable with butane through a valve in the base, and the flint is replaceable: the whole flint unit lifts out of the top. That removable metal flint tube doubles as a handy poker for packing the end of a cone or roll, which is a big part of why it's a sesh staple.

Cloudz

Based: Coatbridge, Scotland

Known for: colourful king size papers, many with tips included

Best for: supporting a home-grown UK brand

Cloudz describes itself as a small, family-run business in Scotland, which makes it one of the few papers brands on our shelves made by people up the road rather than across the Atlantic. The brand says its papers are made from natural wood pulp and are ultra-thin and slow burning. The range covers white, brown, hemp, pink and rainbow king size papers.

Elements

Made by: the same team behind RAW (HBI)

Known for: ultra-thin rice papers

Best for: people who like a thin paper that leaves very little ash

Elements is RAW's rice-paper sibling, created by Josh Kesselman's company. The brand says its papers are pure rice, made without pulp or hemp, and pressed very thin, with a natural gum made from sugar rather than the acacia gum most brands use. In independent testing by Gear Patrol, the rice paper left the least ash of the papers they tried.

We stock the coloured Pink and Green lines, Phantom 1¼ papers, the extra-wide Phatty Supreme, classic cones and tips, plus the limited Elements x Zushi papers, tips and rolling tray.

Known for: extra-thin papers, cones and rolls at low prices

Best for: stocking up without spending much

Flying Papers is the budget hero of the shelf. The brand says it owns its own factories, which lets it sell direct and keep prices low, and that its papers are extra-thin and chlorine-free. It comes in two colourways, white and brown (unbleached), across king size slim and 1¼ papers, slim rolls with tips, king size cones and tip booklets.

RAW

Founded: 1995 by Josh Kesselman (HBI, Phoenix, Arizona)

Known for: natural, unbleached brown papers

Best for: an all-rounder you can find anywhere

RAW is the brand most people picture when they think of papers. Its classic papers are unbleached, with no chemical whiteners, and the brand says each leaf has a criss-cross watermark to help it burn evenly and a natural acacia gum strip.

The main lines are Classic (natural blend), Organic Hemp, Black (RAW's thinnest standard paper) and Ethereal (ultra-thin). Connoisseur packs come with tips included. RAW is also famous for collabs: Wiz Khalifa's papers launched in 2014, and we stock RAW x Lyrical Lemonade (Cole Bennett's Chicago media brand) and RAW x Gary Payton.
